Auto Glass FAQs

How much does it cost to replace a windshield?

The cost of replacing a windshield is highly variable. It depends on a number of factors including the model and make of the vehicle, the type of glass, and the extent of damage.

How do you remove scratches from a windshield?

There are a number of methods for DIY scratch repair. It is important to first check the depth and extent of the scratch. If the scratch is not deep, the DIY approach would first involve thoroughly cleaning your windshield with a microfiber cloth and applying a crack repair product such as an acrylic crack remover.

Keep in mind that his method is only effective for very minor scratches, and it is always better to consult a professional windshield repair company.

How do you prevent a crack in your windshield from spreading?

Some have claimed to have success when using clear nail polish to ensure their windshield cracks and chips don’t spread. While this method has worked for some, we would advise not to rely on it and contact a professional as soon as possible.

Do windshields shatter?

Windshields are able to shatter, depending on several factors such as rapid temperature fluctuations, pressure that has been applied to the windshield (such as hitting large potholes at high speeds), dirt or sand entering the crack (there have been numerous cases of this in vast desert land),  and even animals like birds flying into windshields.

How do you remove water spots from car windows?

Water spots can be a nuisance, and they can be cleaned with a number of solutions such as lemon, baking soda and water, or vinegar and water. Dampen a cloth or towel with your solution of choice, and use this to scrub the water spot. Give it some time to soak, and then use a dry cloth to wipe down the surface until all of the cleaning solution is gone.

What type of glass is used in car windows?

Most cars utilize multiple different types of glass. Modern windshields use laminated glass, meaning that there is a vinyl layer between two exterior glass layers, holding the windshield together in the event of an accident.

The other windows in most modern vehicles are made of tempered glass. This glass is super-heated to provide extra strength and resistance and shatters into tiny round pieces as a safety measure.

Is it illegal to drive with a cracked windshield?

In many cases it is illegal to drive with significant cracks or damage to your windshield. While it may depend on a case-by-case basis, it is always a good idea to contact an auto glass professional to asses the damage.

Can a windshield crack be repaired?

Yes, supposing the damage is not too severe, cracks can be repaired. However, if the damage is serious, it may make sense, both from a financial and safety standpoint, to have the windshield replaced.
